DEF shelf life, storage and freezing: what to know
Diesel exhaust fluid is simple stuff: 32.5% high-purity urea in deionized water. It is also easy to ruin. Heat breaks it down, contamination destroys it, and bad DEF sets codes that lead to a derate.
How long does DEF last?
Shelf life depends mainly on storage temperature. Figures commonly cited from the ISO 22241 guidance:
| Constant storage temperature | Approximate shelf life |
|---|---|
| At or below 50 F (10 C) | About 36 months |
| Up to 77 F (25 C) | About 18 months |
| Up to 86 F (30 C) | About 12 months |
| Up to 95 F (35 C) | About 6 months |
| Above 95 F (35 C) | Test before use |
A jug riding in a black truck bed in summer can get far hotter than the air, which shortens its life a lot. Check the fill date on the container; many brands print it.
How to store DEF
- Keep it sealed, out of direct sunlight, in a cool place.
- Use clean, dedicated containers and funnels. Never reuse a funnel that touched fuel, oil or coolant.
- Do not store it in metal containers other than stainless steel; it reacts with copper, brass, aluminum and zinc.
- Buy from busy outlets, or from the pump at truck stops where turnover is high.
What happens when DEF freezes
DEF freezes at about 12 F (-11 C). Freezing does not damage the fluid; once it thaws it is fine to use. Trucks have heated tanks and lines, and the system is designed to cope with frozen DEF: the engine starts and runs normally while the heaters thaw the fluid. If the heater fails you will get codes like P20B9.
DEF expands about 7% when it freezes, so do not overfill a jug or the tank in winter.
How to tell if DEF is bad
- Use a DEF refractometer. Good DEF reads 32.5% urea (roughly 31.8-33.2% is the accepted range).
- Look for cloudiness, color or crystals in the fluid. Fresh DEF is clear.
- Smell: a strong ammonia smell suggests degradation.
- Codes: P2BA9 (quality), P20EE (SCR efficiency) and DEF quality messages.
If you put the wrong fluid in
If diesel fuel, coolant or anything else went into the DEF tank, do not start the engine. Have the tank drained and flushed. If the engine ran, the pump, lines and doser may need replacing. Plain water will set quality codes and, if it reaches the system, can lead to a derate.

FAQ
Does DEF expire?
Yes. Stored at moderate temperatures it lasts about 18 months to 3 years. Hot storage can shorten that to months.
Is frozen DEF ruined?
No. DEF freezes around 12 F and can be used once thawed. The truck's heaters thaw it in the tank.
Can I add water to DEF?
No. It changes the urea concentration and will set quality codes. Use only certified DEF that meets ISO 22241.
How can I test DEF quality at home?
A DEF refractometer is cheap and accurate. Good DEF reads about 32.5% urea.
